GROUNDSCRAPER, 401 RICHMOND BLOCK PARTY
This is the second in a series of projects in the laneway behind 401 Richmond, Toronto. The key characteristic of these projects is their thinness, essentially becoming a sort of inhabitable fence, turning techniques of exclusion and border-making (fences) into spaces of inclusion (informal public spaces). As a horizontal screen, it is waiting for a projection. In other words, this project is an experiment in what unexpected uses might arise, and what kind of sub-genre can be formed by this intervention. This playfulness is highlighted by the translucent quality that registers the shadow of a tree, a chess table, a stage, and a cave-like place for kids to play.
